If there's one thing motorsport never lacks, it's iconic scenes and legendary moments. Events that have made motorsport history are deeply etched in the memories of fans of all generations. To honor these unforgettable moments, WERK83 has launched the new WERK83 Moments special edition.
As the first model in the new series, WERK83 has recreated Michael Schumacher's three-wheeled Ferrari F300 after its collision with David Coulthard's McLaren at the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix in the usual high-quality WERK83 style, in scale 1:18.
The race at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps was chaotic from start to finish. In torrential rain, one of the worst start-line crashes in Formula 1 history occurred on the very first lap. After a break of more than an hour, the race was restarted and developed into a thrilling battle.
Championship leader Mika Häkkinen retired early after a collision with Johnny Herbert's Sauber, while his McLaren teammate David Coulthard spun out and lost valuable time. These events ultimately led to the infamous incident captured in the latest WERK83 Moments series.
Instructed by his team to let the race leader Schumacher pass, Coulthard slowed down but stayed on the racing line. Almost blinded by the spray from the car ahead, Schumacher crashed into the back of the McLaren at full speed, destroying the right front suspension of his Ferrari. Despite the extensive damage, he limped his car back to the pits on three wheels, where he was forced to retire from the race.
But the drama didn't end there. After both drivers had retired, Schumacher stormed into the McLaren garage to confront Coulthard. Only the intervention of team members from both teams prevented a full-blown confrontation. Coulthard later insisted that he had not acted intentionally to jeopardize the Ferrari driver's title chances. A protest from Ferrari was ultimately rejected by the FIA.
Of course, a legendary race also needed a legendary winner. The chaos at Spa primarily benefited the Jordan team. With his Jordan Mugen-Honda, Damon Hill secured the team's first Formula 1 victory after 126 starts – and simultaneously the last Grand Prix win of his career. The 1996 World Champion would never again stand on the top step of the podium.
For Jordan, the fairytale was complete. Teammate Ralf Schumacher crossed the finish line in second place, completing the team's first one-two finish. To this day, the result at Spa 1998 is considered one of the greatest triumphs in the team's history.
What remains is one of the most legendary scenes in Formula 1 history – now impressively immortalized in the WERK83 Moments series. With its faithful cockpit replica, precise detailing, and high-quality collector's hinged box, this 1:18 scale model is an ideal addition to any collection.
