The first title defense in DTM history: Frank Biela in the Audi V8 quattro DTM

The first title defense in DTM history: Frank Biela in the Audi V8 quattro DTM

back to blog overview

Frank Biela wins the DTM title in his first full season in the championship. The matching Audi V8 quattro DTM to the triumph is now available for your home show case. RRP €79.95, item-no.: W1801508

Frank Biela was one of Germany's rising motorsport talents in the early 1990s. During the 1990 season, the native from Neuss made his debut for Audi in the DTM. That year, Audi entered the German Touring Car Championship with the Audi V8 quattro DTM and was immediately competitive against Mercedes and BMW, both of whom had been active in the series for years.

In the second season in 1991, in which Audi competed with a modified car, Frank Biela competed alongside Frank Jelinski for the Audi Zentrum Reutlingen team. From the very beginning, Biela made things difficult for the competitors: Although Mercedes initially dominated, the future factory driver excelled with podium finishes and consistency. The final result: a total of four race wins – two of them at the finale in Hockenheim – and the well-deserved DTM title. Klaus Ludwig, whose Mercedes was also presented by WERK83, finished runner-up.

What was the unique selling point of the championship-winning car? The 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine powered both axles. This gave the car a weight disadvantage, but its traction and top speed compared to its rear-wheel-drive competitors made up for this disadvantage. Audi was also the only manufacturer to field a sedan rather than a coupe.

But Biela's title win wasn't the first success for the fledgling project. Hans-Joachim "Strietzl" Stuck had already clinched the DTM title in the Audi V8 quattro DTM's debut season in 1990. Following the 1990 title, Frank Biela became the first driver in DTM history to help a manufacturer defend its title the following year. It was also Audi's last DTM title in the "old DTM." In addition to Frank Biela's model, WERK83 also offers Stuck's second championship-winning car (RRP €79.95, item-no.: W1801501C).

The Audi V8 quattro DTM with starting number #45, painted in classic Audi Sport colors, was produced by WERK83 in scale 1:18 with the usual high quality and reflects the original as closely as possible. Frank Biela's championship-winning car features a faithful replica of the cockpit, steerable front wheels, and opening doors.
