Review to October 11th, 2020: Formula 1 is in the middle of its strange Corona season. The Nürburgring is hosting the last race of the premier class on German soil to date. Lewis Hamilton wins the Eifel Grand Prix. It is the Briton's 91st Grand Prix victory, equaling Michael Schumacher's long-untouched record for most race wins - just on the home track of the man from Kerpen. A few weeks later, Hamilton would also draw level with Schumacher in the world championship titles and crown himself world champion for the seventh time at the Turkish Grand Prix.
To mark this milestone, Minichamps has released an impressive and unique model set that includes all seven of Lewis Hamilton's world championship cars in scale 1:43. The 7-Car Set not only honors Hamilton's impressive achievements, but also shows the technical development in Formula 1 over more than a decade with the detailed models. The cars are also lovingly arranged in a folding box in a helmet design.
As a long-time McLaren protégé, Lewis Hamilton entered Formula 1 in 2007. After an immensely successful debut season, Hamilton narrowly missed out on the world championship title in the showdown in Brazil. The decision against Felipe Massa a year later was similarly close and memorable, but this time with the better end and the first world championship title for Lewis Hamilton. The strikingly shiny chrome McLaren MP4/23 opens the series of seven set models. When comparing all the scale cars, the compact dimensions, the small, delicate aerodynamic attachments and the grooved tires are particularly striking. The bright yellow helmet, which was a trademark in Hamilton's early Formula 1 days, also stands out.
After the debut title in 2008, McLaren failed to achieve any further world championship successes. In 2013, the Briton moved to Mercedes as Michael Schumacher's successor, who dominated Formula 1 from 2014 onwards with the introduction of the new regulations and hybrid engines. Hamilton beat Nico Rosberg twice in a row within the team and became world champion again in 2014 and 2015 with the Mercedes F1 W05 and W06 included in the set.
After Nico Rosberg had the upper hand in 2016, Hamilton struck back the following year and began a series of four world championship titles in a row from 2017 to 2020. The W08, which was successful in 2017, looks very different from its predecessors, as the dimensions of the cars were fundamentally changed for the 2017 season. This is particularly evident in the track width, which has increased by 20 centimeters to two meters, and the larger tires. The fin on the engine cover, including the T-wing, also stands out.
This element disappeared from the 2018 W09, which, however, has another striking element in the form of the newly introduced Halo cockpit protection. The 2019 World Championship winner, on the other hand, can only be identified by minimal changes to the color and aerodynamic design. The W10 has a mostly black rear section, a larger starting number and a differently sized rear wing.
Lewis Hamilton's last world championship car to date, which completes the set, stands out all the more clearly from the rest of the collection. In 2020, Mercedes sent its cars onto the track for the first time with a black design, which was well received by many fans and is still used today with exceptions.
The high-quality 7-car set from Minichamps is limited to 744 pieces exclusively for ck-modelcars.
