Mercedes-Benz and Formula 1 belong firmly together. The car manufacturer from Affalterbach is not only known for the legendary Silver Arrows and its recent successes, but has also been ensuring safety in the premier class since 1996 with the use of the Safety-Car. Since 2021, Mercedes-Benz has shared this position with partner company Aston Martin. The Safety-Cars of both brands are used alternately in the races.

Legendary Mercedes Safety-Cars like the CLK 63 AMG or the SLS AMG were followed by the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series in 2022. The new flagship of the traditional German manufacturer inherited the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R. Piloted by former DTM driver Bernd Mayländer, the new Safety-Car, in a striking red, stood out straight away and convinced the 52-year-old right away. “It's a big step compared to the AMG GT R, which was already at a high level. A job like this that serves safety is a dream come true,” said the long-time Safety-Car driver after the first trips in his new company car.

The Safety-Car is based on the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series introduced in 2020. Its 730 hp make it the most powerful AMG V8 of all time. With countless aerodynamic components, a performance-oriented chassis and a top speed of 325 kph, the GT Black Series is a road-legal racing car. However, in order to make the super sports car suitable for use as a safety car, the vehicle was fundamentally revised again. The chassis was adjusted, monitors were installed in the interior and two separate radio systems were installed. The eye-catching lighting system, which was used for the first time in 2022 on the rear of the vehicle, is particularly striking. The predecessors carried their lighting system on the roof, but this disrupted the aerodynamics. In addition to this change, the AMG GT Black Series has LEDs in the windshield, on the license plate and in the front and rear headlights.
