It's no secret that Michael Schumacher, with his seven world championship titles, is one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time. However, few know that the driver from Kerpen competed in a few races of the German Touring Car Championship in 1990 and 1991. As a Mercedes-Benz junior at the time, he drove a Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II in a total of three DTM events. With a total weight of just 980 kilograms and a 2.5-liter engine producing a whopping 370 hp, his car was a truly special weapon in the field of the DTM at the time.
Schumacher's first appearance at the 1990 season finale at the Hockenheimring is particularly legendary. The future Formula 1 star didn't even make it a single lap in his first guest appearance, promptly colliding with Johnny Cecotto, who was then the championship leader. In doing so, he made the then Audi driver Hans-Joachim Stuck the DTM champion. "This dirty game has nothing to do with sport," a disappointed Johnny Cecotto subsequently railed at the then Mercedes-Benz Junior Team driver.
In the 1991 season, Schumacher once again got into a touring car – this time in the striking Kärcher livery. Even with this, Schumacher missed the points on both race weekends. After another accident at the Norisring, Schumacher finished 25th and 14th, respectively, which would ultimately prove to be his best result in his short DTM career. Just a short time later, the then 22-year-old was behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car and proved to the world what he was capable of: The rest is motorsport history.
