The last Porsche with air-cooled boxer engine of the 911-model series

The last Porsche with air-cooled boxer engine of the 911-model series

back to blog overview

The limited version of the fourth generation of the Porsche 911 by label Minichamps in scale 1:43.

Recently, the Porsche 911 of the 993 series celebrated its 30th birthday, which was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1993. As the successor to the 964 series, the Porsche 993 follows in big footsteps in the 911 series. At the same time, the series, which rolled off the assembly line between 1993 and 1998, represents the last Porsche 911 with an air-cooled boxer engine. When it came to the design, Porsche deliberately tried to make the lines appear elegant in order to do justice to the critics who criticized the shapes of the 964 and above all whose bumpers were too bulky. In addition to the “Carrera” and “Targa” versions, the 911 (993) was also available in the top “Turbo” version, which Minichamps launched exclusively for ck-modelcars. The 993 Turbo is available in red metallic. If the 408 hp of the 993 Turbo wasn't enough, you could order the even rarer Turbo S. This version of the “Turbo” achieved 450 hp thanks to factory tuning. Minichamps also has the right model available for this in scale 1:43 in the color yellow. Both colors are limited to a quantity of 500 pieces. What both models have in common, in addition to the limitation, is the usual high quality and attention to detail that we have come to expect from Minichamps.

When designing the 993 series, chief designer Harm Lagaay oriented himself heavily on the original model of the Porsche 911. In the fourth series of the 911, the body and bumpers form more of a unit than in the 964 and the rear fenders form a striking line. The only thing that is unchanged from the previous model is the roofline. The top model “Turbo” and the even more powerful variant “Turbo S” can be recognized by the large, fixed rear wing. This ensures more downforce and covers the intercoolers used, which no longer fit in the actual engine compartment due to a lack of space and therefore had to be arranged above it. For the first time, xenon headlights can be selected on the surcharge list for a Porsche 911. Lagaay doesn't change much in the interior. The 993 is the last 911 to have the five round instruments located next to each other in the cockpit. On the left there are two instruments for oil temperature, oil pressure and oil level, a tachometer in the middle, then the speedometer and on the far right a timer.

The engine of the 993 developed between 272 and 286 hp, depending on the version. The Turbo top model, which we present in this blog post from the label Minichamps, had an output of 408 hp (the aforementioned Turbo S even had 450 hp) and was equipped with all-wheel drive as standard. The air-cooled 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine was equipped with a total of two turbochargers. A total of just over 4,800 examples of the Porsche 911 (993) Turbo and Turbo S were delivered. Porsche's Exclusive department even produced 14 examples as a convertible, which were delivered to selected customers. At the beginning of 2015, almost 730 copies were still registered in Germany. Anyone who decides to own a 993 Turbo today can rarely expect a purchase price of less than €200,000.
