The prehistory of the Porsche 911 - from the idea to the world premiere
by Peter Weidenhammer
Edition Porsche Museum
The development from the four-seater 530 prototype to the 901 is one of the most exciting decades in Porsche history. Numerous previously unpublished original documents provide a detailed picture of concepts, designs, backgrounds and decisions. A central role is played by the Type 695, whose final design was ultimately built as a one-off and became the model for the Type 754. File notes, meeting minutes and memoranda document why the big Porsche failed and why Ferry Porsche decided on a completely new project with a drastic cut: the T8, which soon received the type number 901 and was presented to the world public as the successor to the 356 at the International Motor Show in September 1963. Thus begins the success story of the Prosche 911.
