24 hours Nürburgring Nordschleife 2013
by Ulrich Upietz
The already unique history of the world's biggest motorsport event has been enriched by another breathtaking chapter. "People will still be talking about this weather years from now," was how organisation manager Peter Geishecker summed it up. There was fog on Friday, early summer on Saturday and extreme star racing in the night from Sunday to Monday. The 41st edition of the ADAC Zurich 24-hour race offered every conceivable weather scenario in front of 210,000 spectators and had to be interrupted for about nine hours because of the visibility conditions.
At the front of the 173-car field, five different brands - Audi, Aston Martin, BMW, Mercedes Benz and Porsche - were able to get a taste of the lead for the first time. Depending on the weather, one brand had the advantage over the other. At the end of the day, the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT3 from Black Falcon was the deserved and much acclaimed winner. And motorsport legend Bernd Schneider finally has his first 24h Nürburgring victory in the bag.
After Caracciola, Nuvolari, Fangio, Clark, Bellof and Larini, there is a new "Ringmeister": Maxime Martin. Ringmeister is a British neologism, a tribute awarded for decades - but extremely rarely - for almost unique achievements on the world's most difficult race track.
The Belgian BMW driver was the undisputed star of the race. In the rain up to 45 seconds, on a dry track up to 20 seconds per lap faster than the next, testify to the incredible talent of the 27-year-old and an incredible performance on the most difficult race track in the world.
But this book also tells of many other heroic deeds, of dramas, successes, rarities and curiosities. It accompanies the 176 teams on their race through the "Green Hell", describes successes and defeats and reports about cars and people. As usual, the supporting races, the programme off the track and, of course, the fans are not neglected. This traditional yearbook is rounded off by an extensive statistics section.
