The Porsche 935 K3 on the Daytona podium – the battle with almost 800 hp against the clock

The Porsche 935 K3 on the Daytona podium – the battle with almost 800 hp against the clock

back to blog overview

Porsche 935 K3 by WERK83 in scale 1:18 - the second placed from 24h Daytona 1981, RRP €79.95, item-no.: W18042001

The Porsche 935 K3 is still considered one of the most successful GT racing cars of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Developed by Kremer Racing, the car was technically based on the Porsche 911 Turbo, but was optimized in almost every respect for endurance racing. The K3 became legendary with its victory at Le Mans in 1979 – but the concept also proved its competitiveness two years later.

At the 1981 24 Hours of Daytona, the private Bob Akin Motor Racing team faced the assembled factory competition with a Kremer-Porsche 935 K3. This model car from WERK83 is a stylish tribute to this effort. In scale 1:18, it impresses with its high level of detail and functionality. The steerable front wheels and opening doors allow a glimpse into the lovingly designed interior with a roll cage, bucket seats, and cockpit details. The paint scheme, starting numbers, and sponsor logos accurately reflect the look of the original race car from Daytona in 1981. The wide rear end with flared wheel arches and the striking front end were reproduced to scale.

At the wheel of the 935 K3 with starting number 5 in February 1981 were Bob Akin, Craig Siebert, and Briton Derek Bell, one of the best endurance drivers of his time. Together, the trio drove with great consistency and strategy to second place in the overall standings. A true sensation in a race characterized by a battle of equipment, changing weather conditions, and a high retirement rate.

With the Daytona K3, WERK83 is not only bringing an iconic vehicle back to the display case, but also the memory of one of the most spectacular performances by a customer team in the history of US endurance racing. This model is a true highlight for collectors, Porsche fans, and motorsport enthusiasts. It tells of an era in which courage and enthusiasm for technology often made the difference. It tells of drivers like Derek Bell, who excelled as all-rounders at Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring. It tells of gentleman racers like Bob Akin, who built teams with passion and celebrated success. And of cars like the Porsche 935 K3 – uncompromising, powerful, and unmistakable.
