From the street coupe to a racing weapon -- the Capri RS 3100 in action

From the street coupe to a racing weapon -- the Capri RS 3100 in action

back to blog overview

The racing car of Rolf Stommelen and Jochen Mass from the ETCC 1974 season as 1:18 model by WERK83 RRP €79.95, item-no.: W1801101

The Ford Capri RS 3100 was Ford's answer to the competition in European touring car racing in the 1970s. With its flat lines, wide fenders, and distinctive sound, it competed against BMW, Alfa Romeo, and other major players in the ETCC. The Capri RS 3100 was the last factory-supported top model of the first Capri generation before Ford slowly withdrew from factory racing in the mid-1970s. In 1974, the team achieved fifth place in a factory effort at Zandvoort, won by two true motorsport greats: Rolf Stommelen and Jochen Mass.

The participation in the ETCC race can now be relived in scale 1:18. The model by WERK83 faithfully recreates the Ford Capri RS 3100 with starting number 5, which competed at Zandvoort in 1974. The model's doors open, the front wheels are steerable, and the proportions are also identical to the full-size model. The paintwork, sponsor logos, and the characteristic rear spoiler bring the 1970s atmosphere back into collectors' display cases.

When Jochen Mass and Rolf Stommelen took the wheel of the Capri in 1974, both were already well known. Mass, later a Formula 1 driver and Le Mans winner, was one of the most talented German circuit drivers of the 1970s. Rolf Stommelen, in turn, was considered a true all-rounder – successful in Formula 1, sports cars, and touring cars. Together, they formed a powerful duo for Ford and battled their way through the demanding coastal circuit in the Dutch dunes with the RS 3100.

The Ford Capri RS 3100 was powered by a race-tuned 3.1-liter V6 engine from the Essex series, which, in the Group 2 version, produced between 400 and 440 hp, depending on the setup. Weighing in at just 1,000 kilograms, the Capri reached a top speed of around 270 kph, depending on the track setup. This combination of low weight, high performance, and reliable technology made the RS 3100 one of the most fearsome competitors in the 1974 ETCC season.

Anyone who is passionate about the era of classic touring cars or is looking for models with a true motorsport history will find this Capri a must-have. A piece of racing – raw, fast, and unmistakable. And now in a format suitable for every home.
