The Opel Calibra V6 4x4, co-developed by factory driver Manuel Reuter, was one of the most technologically advanced touring cars of the 1990s. Equipped with a 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine producing 500 hp, it also featured all-wheel drive, a semi-automatic six-speed transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and a sophisticated hydraulic system for adjusting differential locks and anti-roll bars.

Thanks to this advanced technology, Opel prevailed against strong competition from Mercedes and Alfa Romeo in the 1996 International Touring Car Championship. Manuel Reuter, an Opel driver, won the drivers' championship. Thanks to the successful use of the other Calibra 4x4s, Opel also led the manufacturers' championship. Uwe Alzen and his fellow drivers from Team Zakspeed, Klaus Ludwig and Volker Strycek, played a major role in this.

With multiple podium finishes at the Circuito do Estoril, the Norisring, Mugello, and the Hockenheimring, Alzen piloted the #16 Calibra reliably and successfully throughout the season. The car, sporting the distinctive yellow "ProMarkt" livery, ultimately placed Alzen eighth in the overall ITC standings, just behind teammate Klaus Ludwig.
