Stefan Bellof: The eternal Nordschleifen-record

Stefan Bellof: The eternal Nordschleifen-record

back to blog overview

The Rothmans Porsche 956K is one of the most famous Group C racing cars of the 1980s - also due to Stefan Bellof's record lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. WERK83 offers a high-quality resin model of this special car in the unmistakable colors of the Rothmans cigarette brand in scale 1:12. RRP 249.95€, item-no.: W12001001 + BS-17-812-B

At the Porsche 956K, the K stands for "short tail" - an aerodynamically adapted variant for higher speeds, which was specially designed for long-distance races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans or the 1,000-kilometer race on the Nürburgring. In the 1983 season, the Rothmans team used the blue and white 956K with great success, which was to become one of the most famous vehicles in the history of Porsche Motorsport.

A 2.65-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with turbocharging produced almost 620 hp under the innovative aluminum monocoque weighing just 800 kilograms. The new five-speed dual-clutch transmission helped to channel the power in the right direction and ensure the fast gear changes that are essential for racing. The aerodynamically optimized design of the 956K aimed at the lowest possible resistance with maximum contact pressure and optimal handling through the wide and extremely low chassis shape, 13-inch rims on the front axle, more camber, improved steering and the high and wide wing.

In addition to winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1982 and second place overall the following year, the Porsche 965K also achieved considerable success in the 1,000-kilometer race on the Nürburgring. The British motorsport icon Derek Bell was always in the cockpit. The German Stefen Bellof drove the Rothmans Porsche together with Bell and wrote racing history in 1983 when he set a lap record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife with his 956K that is still legendary today.

As part of the training for the 1,000-kilometer race as a stage of the World Endurance Championship, Bellof literally flew over the 20.835-kilometer Nordschleife, which was two kilometers shorter than usual due to the construction of the Grand Prix track. Bellof mastered the "Green Hell" in just 6:11.13 minutes and reached an average speed of 202 kilometers per hour. The lap record remained unbroken for over 30 years.

The WERK83 model in scale 1:12 is an impressive replica of the record-breaking Porsche. A sticker with the unforgettable lap time is included in the delivery.
