Novelty for collectors: The Zakspeed Ford Capri Turbo by Jürgen Hamelmann

Novelty for collectors: The Zakspeed Ford Capri Turbo by Jürgen Hamelmann

back to blog overview

Racing driver Jürgen Hamelmann and the brand Ford are strongly connected.

Hamelmann celebrated the very first successes of his racing career in 1980 in the second division of the German Racing Championship behind the wheel of a Ford Escort RS 2000. Hamelmann was able to place in the top ten in seven of the 13 races and ultimately ended up in the championship standings Rank 28.

The following year, with a clear eye on a top placement in the overall classification, he switched to the then almost unbeatable Zakspeed Ford Capri Turbo. With a record of five third places and four fourth positions, the Ford driver fought his way to the top positions in the table and took a strong sixth place in the 1981 German Racing Championship.

The eye-catching green, black and yellow Capri was not only a technical masterpiece of its time. The design of the racing car also attracted everyone's attention. The symmetrical shapes, which began as diamonds on the hood and then extended and extended along the body to the huge rear wing, ensured a high level of recognition. The sponsor at the time, Pentosin, integrated its color-coordinated logo clearly visible on the wing of the car without disturbing the overall concept of color and design.

The Zakspeed Capri owes its unusual and at the same time sophisticated aerodynamics, which included both the huge rear wing and the brutal front splitter, to students and professors at the TH Aachen. In joint research with Ford's Cologne racing department, the technical possibilities of the add-on parts were to be optimized in the wind tunnel. Coupled with the long wheelbase and the around 600 hp turbo engine, a racing monster was born that made the competition look more than old in its golden age.

Jürgen Hamelmann's unique Zakspeed Ford Capri Turbo with starting number four is available for the first time as a collector's model in scale 1:18. The Porsche killer from the early 80s manufactured by WERK83 shines inside and out with high quality and absolute attention to detail. An original replica cockpit and opening doors complete the model and make it a must for every collector.
