Road Kings delivers a homage to a film that is not only cult for the children of the 80s

Road Kings delivers a homage to a film that is not only cult for the children of the 80s

back to blog overview

The story of the snowman and bandit, a truck full of beer and a mad chase across the United States

"You know that transporting alcohol across a state border without a state permit is considered alcohol smuggling?" - That's how the film "Smokey and the bandit" begins. It is about a car chase between a Pontiac Trans Am and everything the police force in the states to be crossed has to offer in terms of vehicles. In reality, however, the Trans Am only distracts from an illegal truck full of beer, which starts its journey through the USA at the same time. The truck is pulled by a Kenworth W900 tractor unit. And it is exactly this truck, in the livery of the film, that we are presenting from Road Kings in our blog today. The Road Kings model's front wheels steer and the Kenworth's doors open. The interior is based on the original in detail. Fans of the film will definitely get their money's worth here. If you want it to be even more detailed, you can also purchase the Bandit and Snowman figures in our shop under item numbers RK18A012 and RK18A013.

Bandit is trucker and known for his desire to make one or another bet for money. So it comes in handy that the two Texas tire dealers "Big" and "Little Enos Burdette" want to offer him a bet. The bet is to ship 400 cases of Coors beer from Texarkana, Texas to Atlanta, Giorgia. 28 hours is the time window in which the distance of over 2200km is to be covered. The reward is $80,000. What makes the bet a bit tricky is that US food laws consider this very transportation, without state authorization, to be alcohol smuggling. To have a chance, Bandit convinces his friend Cledus (nicknamed Snowman) to help him. While Snowman is driving the Kenworth W900 with 400 crates of beer, Bandit with a Pontiac Firebird causes such a stir with various speeding violations, among other things, that the police don't even have time to check the truck. The way there is relatively unproblematic. On the way back, the situation becomes more difficult because, in addition to the 400 crates of contraband beer that have now been loaded, a hitchhiker in a wedding dress comes into play, who takes a seat in Bandit's passenger seat. Beautiful Carrie escaped from her marriage to a Texas sheriff's son just in time. Out of his own interest, he also joins the already very crazy chase. At the end there is various body damage and a lot of material for the viewer's laughing muscles on the credit side of the film.

The model W900 of the American truck manufacturer Kenworth is probably one of the most resistant models, one could think of. The W900 is produced since 1961 and thus makes it one of the longest production runs in automotive history. The introduction of the model caused Kenworth double its sales in the years following its introduction.
