Le Mans: 24 hours of action and up to 24% discount at ck-modelcars

back to blog overview

When the starting gun for the 24 Hours of Le Mans is given at the weekend, the team from ck-modelcars is also in racing fever. A good reason to take a look at the past as well as at our shop!

We dedicate the beginning of our review to Derek Bell, who is without a doubt one of the most legendary drivers of the 24-hour race in France. He secured overall victory five times and was named Grand Marshal of this year's event by the organizers. His triumph in 1982 was one of his greatest successes. While the competition usually had three drivers, he only took turns with team-mate Jacky Ickx at the wheel. The manufacturer Solido has dedicated a high-quality 1:18 scale model to the Porsche 956 LH of the two legends - equipped with steerable front wheels and other highlights.

Porsche didn't give the competition a chance in 1982 and took the first five places. With a similar dominance, Ford made its mark on the long-distance classic on the Sarthe in 1966. The set of two model cars from CMR is a reminder of the glorious victory of the Americans. The winning vehicle from Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon as well as the Ford GT40 Mk.II of the runner-up Ken Miles and Denis Hulme were modeled in great detail.

In the recent past, Toyota has been the brand to beat. After Porsche and Audi left, it was up to the Japanese to take the long-awaited victory. The long dry spell came to an end in 2018 and perseverance was rewarded. Kazuki Nakajima was the first to see the checkered flag after 24 hours and gave himself and his two teammates Sébastien Buemi and Fernando Alonso the victory. A historic moment captured by Spark in this set (1:43 scale). The production from resin, the presentation box and a corresponding figure make the product a must for Toyota fans

Jaguar was also successful at Le Mans, but most people remembered it because of its extraordinary vehicle design. The Jaguar XJR-9 from 1988 had covered rear wheels, which provided better aerodynamics and made the model an absolute rarity in the history of Le Mans.

Speaking of rarity: the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo should still be a household name for many fans. It is linked to Nissan's failed LMP1 project. The Japanese decided on a technical concept that was clearly different from the competition. The prototype was characterized by weak lap times and a high susceptibility to defects - seldom before has a manufacturer been so embarrassed. And yet the car is part of the history of the 24-hour race and therefore also in the showcase of every Nissan fan. The model was made by PremiumX on a scale of 1:43.
