In autumn 1980 the first generation VW Passat was replaced by a successor model with the internal type designation 32B. Initially only available as a 4-door hatchback, in 1981 a 2-door hatchback and a station wagon version called "Variant" were added. A notchback variant under the Santana name was available from autumn 1981. The notchback sedan was a particular success abroad, e.g. B. in South America and China. The VW Carat model reproduced here was marketed under this name in Argentina. In Germany, the model name Santana was dropped in 1985 and was offered as a Passat notchback until the end of production in 1988.
