Like the BMW M8 Coupé, the BMW 850i Cabriolet is clearly one of the BMW studies that unfortunately never found its way onto public roads. Developed as a competing model for the new Mercedes-Benz SL of the R129 series, which was also presented at the 1989 International Motor Show, this beautiful and unique BMW Cabriolet unfortunately did not make it to series production. Only 3 prototypes of the so-called BMW 850Ci based on the E31 series were built and subjected to extensive test drives before the decision in Munich to discontinue the 850Ci Cabriolet project for fear of economic failure.
