Ravaglia started his motorsport career with BMW in 1984 as part of the European Touring Car Championship. Two years later, he won the European Championship title with his racing car, the BMW 635 CSi. The following year, he competed in the newly established World Touring Car Championship, where the Italian from Venice also secured the championship title in a BMW M3.
In addition to his successes in touring car racing, Roberto Ravaglia was also very successful in endurance racing. In addition to a victory in the 1994 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps in a BMW 318i, he also won the Nürburgring 24 Hours the following year in a BMW 320i. In the final year of his active motorsport career, in 1997, he finished on the overall podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Schnitzer in a McLaren F1 GTR.
The 1989 DTM season was characterized by the battle between three brands – the BMW M3, the Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth, and the Mercedes 190E 2.5-16. In the end, Roberto Ravaglia prevailed for BMW M Team Schnitzer against strong competition. It was the second title for the BMW M3 after 1987.
That Ravaglia was one of the top favorites in the battle for the championship title was already clear after the opening weekend at Circuit Zolder in Belgium. In addition to pole position and a fastest lap, the Schnitzer driver also secured victory in both races. His third victory of the season followed on the fifth race weekend at the Avus in Berlin.
But it wasn't just the victories, but especially his consistency throughout the entire season, with a total of six further podium finishes and only a few races in which he didn't score points, that made the decisive difference in the fiercely contested championship. In the end, he prevailed against Ford driver Klaus Niedzwiedz with 285 points to 274, securing BMW's third driver title in DTM history.
The BMW M3 Evo with starting number 15 was painted in the classic BMW M colors of red, light blue, and dark blue. With Warsteiner as a sponsor on the car and the striking red interior, the car was highly recognizable.
