It is about two Miniatures of a very special automobile for which the parterns iScale and ck-modelcars.de have decided to cooperate. Models of the Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9, the top version of the first vehicle that the car manufacturer from Stuttgart have sold under the name S-Class. The modelcars of this variant of the W 116 series are based on the year of construction 1975 and appear in magnetite blue metallic under item number 18084 and under 18081 in the color classic white. While the length of the prototypes is shown in the data sheets at 5.06 meters, the models are slightly more than 28 centimeters long and reflect the longer wheelbase of the then luxury class star. Built from diecast in format 1:18, equipped with lots of chrome and with their fair price, they are the stars of this week's novelties.
A look at the history books shows that, due to the oil crisis at the beginning of the 1970s, the role model of the models was responsible for the fact that the 450 SEL 6.9 was presented to the public around a year and a half later in May 1975. This, however, was a huge success, because the eight-cylinder with its 6.9 liter displacement fascinates buyers and car fans alike: 210 kW / 286 hp and 549 Newton meters (Nm) of maximum torque developed the engine, which is huge for German post-war conditions, at 4250 rpm and thus ensures driving performance at the best sports car level. The sedan reaches 100 kph in 7.4 seconds; the maximum speed is given as 225 kilometers per hour. The power is transferred to the rear wheels of the four-door car, which cost DM 69,930.00 when it was launched, by means of a three-speed automatic transmission.
In the interior, the then rather subtle luxury of the automotive upper class received, whereby, for example, leather seats have to be ordered separately, the standard upholstery material is high quality velor. The model is often ordered as a chauffeur limousine, and a correspondingly high value is placed on a vehicle fund with great comfort: Electrically adjustable seats or heated seats are available as options. Reading lights in the rearmost roof pillar provide light for studying files on a long journey - or for relaxing browsing after a long day at work. And the person on the valance does not have to starve either, there you can also travel with a high level of comfort. In addition, there is ergonomics in the cockpit that sets standards. All passengers enjoy the standard hydropneumatic suspension with level control.
The much-cited comparison with a sedan chair is permitted as an exception: you can hardly be more comfortable on the road this year, even at high speed. A total of exactly 7,380 units were built by 1980, the majority of which made it to the USA and served as wheeled vehicles for celebrities and heads of state. Today, depending on the condition and source, a Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 costs between EUR 24,000.00 and EUR 60,000.00. However, the buyer should allow for high repair and spare parts prices for this car. Around 25 pieces are currently on offer in Germany. Fortunately, the modelcars from ck-modelcars.de and iScale are now available at a much lower price and, above all, without the risk of high workshop costs. Until mid-March also with a 10 percent discount through the wintersale!
