Friends of motorsports in general and of the formula 1 especially will remember to the season 1984, in which it was reserved for McLaren Racing to dominate the royal class. The battle between the twice champion Niki Lauda and Alain Prost will not be forgotten: They started as teammates in the McLaren MP4-2, which was designed by star designer John Barnard and stood out because of its clean drawn lines together with the invented bottleneck by the British. The race car was driven by a relabeled Porsche-engine from Sponsor TAG. Lauda and Prost won with the MP4-2 twelve of 16 world cup runs in 1984. The Austrian was five times on the top of the podium; his teammate Prost secured seven victories. The team had achieved four double victories with the MP4-2. But this was nothing against the fight between both drivers about the world cup!

The season was so thrilling in the end just because Lauda and Prost have pushed their fight for the title to the extreme. Although Lauda won less often, he was without exception the more consistent pilot, because he always finished his races as a winner or second placed: he was the absolute no. 1 in the team; for Prost it was as the successor of John Watson the first year in the McLaren. The decision as who could ultimately celebrate as champion remained open until the last race in Estoril. Until then, Lauda had 66 points, Prost came to 62.5 points. To get the World Cup, Lauda finished second. Prost started from the front row; Lauda had qualifying problems and started far behind in eleventh place. Although Prost stayed ahead straight away, but at half-time Lauda was in third place. After a spin of Mansell in the Lotus Lauda had the place he needed.
