Still in trend: BMW M3 model series E30 from the DTM 1989 to 1991

back to blog overview

Ottomobile and CMR remind a champion with the modelcars that still inspires its fans: In scale 1.12 and 1:43 with Roberto Ravaglia and Johnny Cocetto

While one trend is about to weaken, another curve goes further upwards: According to the opinion of the editors of this blog, the number of new releases of modelcars on a scale of 1:12 is falling a little bit: While Minichamps has let off steam especially in the Porsche 911 and other manufacturers followed suit with miniatures such as the BMW M1 or Ford GT40, innovations in this size are now appearing in a somewhat smaller range. With the BMW M3 of the E30 series, however, around 36 centimeters long 1:12 models are once again on the editorial desk: Ottomobile is reminiscent of the BMW M Team Schnitzer car, whose driver Roberto Ravaglia drove the DTM - at that time still the German Touring Car Championship - won in 1989. CMR is also expanding its program with a BMW M3 DTM, but in the scale 1:43.

The BMW M3 enjoys great popularity across all his generations. That was not any different in motorsport: The production of the BMW M3 model series E30 started in 1986; designed as a vehicle for homologation for participation in the DTM. In contrast to the more civilian representatives of its series, the M3 was delivered with a modified front apron, wider sills and an optimized rear with a new trunk lid. For the athletes, the tank capacity was more important than the trunk volume, so it was increased from 62 to 70 liters. The most powerful variant of the BMW M3 for the DTM was the BMW M3 Sport Evolution version: its 2.5 liter four-cylinder in-line engine from the S14 series developed 175 kW / 238 hp. And the modelcars from Ottomobile and CMR correspond exactly to this model in their different scales.

In format 1:12, the label Ottomodels delivers the racing car of Roberto Ravaglia. These modelcars are produced from the high quality polyurethan cast resin and appear in a limited unit of 1.999 pieces. Of course, they replicate every detail of the interior, which is equipped with functional racing fittings, roll cages and Recaro seats; perfect in every joint of its outer skin and provided with the item number G55. An antenna on the roof, the gold-colored BBS cross-spoke rims - all top notch and suitable to rekindle the fans' love for the BMW M3 of this era. CMR also does a first-class job in the ten centimeters of space that Johnny Cecotto's Sport Evolution takes up in 1:43. These models, built from diecast are with starting number 3 under item number CMR43059 also a direct hit right in the heart of the fans.
