On the starting lap, Jackie Oliver collided with Jacky Ickx after losing control of his car due to a broken suspension. Both cars immediately burst into flames. Oliver was able to save himself with a jump and remained uninjured. Ickx initially had problems opening his seat belts and suffered minor burns as a result of the delay.
