17.07.2025Fiat racing transporter: A bus with very special passengers

At the end of the 1950s, the Italian car-body builder Carrozzeria Bartoletti constructed an open racing transporter with space for three cars. The vehicle was based on the bus chassis of the Fiat 642 RN2 with the typical Baffo cab. Measuring over nine meters long and almost three meters high, the transporter was equipped with a six-cylinder diesel engine producing 92 hp and offered ample space for an integrated workshop, a fuel tank, and sleeping accommodations. Bartoletti thus set new standards in the field of racing transporters. Their creation served both Scuderia Ferrari and the Maserati Formula 1 team as a mobile base for all European races.

In the 1960s, this unique vehicle changed hands several times. Teams such as Scarab, Lotus, and Shelby used the Bartoletti for their racing cars, with the latter manufacturer retrofitting a third axle due to its heavy Cobras. The van's popularity grew further with an appearance in the cult film "Le Mans" in 1970, before temporarily disappearing from the public eye. Rediscovered in Italy in the late 1980s, the van was finally faithfully restored and auctioned at the Goodwood Revival in 2018.
