Throughout the history of the Formula 1 World Championship, there have been numerous extraordinary developments on the cars. One of these special innovations was Ferrari's "Tower Wings" in the 1998 season. These "Tower Wings" are two additional vertical wings mounted on the monocoque surface to the left and right of the cockpit opening. The goal was to increase downforce, particularly on the front axle, without negatively impacting the efficiency of the main front wing.
Formula 1 teams have always tried to exploit the gray areas of the regulations to their advantage. In the FIA's regulations back then, such aerodynamically complex shapes were not completely prohibited, but they were also not clearly defined. Nevertheless, the "Tower Wings" met with unease from the FIA ??and were banned shortly after their introduction. The FIA ??classified them as dangerous because they could impair the drivers' visibility and pose a hazard, especially in the event of an accident. They also caused a certain degree of instability in crosswinds, and thus, the development of these wings was not further focused on.
The "Tower Wings" were first tested at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola. Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine drove the special wings on their sidepods during free practice and qualifying on the fourth race weekend of the season – but started the race in the original car without the "Tower Wings."
In the race, won by David Coulthard after the early retirement of his teammate Mika Häkkinen, Ferrari achieved its first double podium of the season, marking a turning point after a dominant start by McLaren-Mercedes, repeatedly putting Häkkinen and Coulthard under pressure.
The Ferrari F300 with Tower Wings is now considered an iconic example of unusual aerodynamic experiments in Formula 1. It is a reminder of how Formula 1 engineers often sought to exploit regulatory loopholes with innovative spirit.
The special Ferrari with "Tower Wings" is available from the manufacturer WERK83 in scale 1:18. The model, with tobacco decals pre-applied to the car, is a new addition to the "Tower Wings" range from WERK83.
