A milestone in motorsport history: The Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am

A milestone in motorsport history: The Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am

back to blog overview

WERK83 has released many models of the unforgotten Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am in scale 1:18. Not only the American Hurley Haywood played a key role in this success, but also the two German motorsport icons Walter Röhrl and Hans-Joachim Stuck. RRP €79.95, item-no.: W1801401, W1801402

In 1988, Audi presented a racing car that would turn the Trans-Am series upside down. With an Audi 200 specially designed for the American championship, the German manufacturer held its own against the established competition.

After outstanding successes, including in the World Rally Championship, the Audi Sport team took the next step and dared to take the quattro into circuit racing. Based on the production model of the Audi 200, the Trans-Am version was tailored to the requirements of the circuit series on the other side of the pond with a more powerful engine and technical finesse. A two-liter inline five-cylinder turbo engine produced an impressive 510 hp and the permanent all-wheel drive offered unprecedented traction and stability on the race track.

The exterior of the Audi 200 Trans-Am was also hardly reminiscent of the production vehicle. The beefy front lip, the unmistakable rear spoiler and the wide side skirts only hinted at the Audi 200 as such. Lightweight construction measures such as the use of Kevlar and other composite materials resulted in a significant reduction in weight. A perfect combination of power, good handling and optimal aerodynamics made the competition tremble.

In the 1988 season, Audi made a spectacular debut in the Trans-Am series. With the three exceptional drivers Walter Röhrl, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Hurley Haywood, Audi dominated the championship from the start and was able to win not only the constructors' championship, but also the drivers' championship with Hurley Haywood as overall winner. The driver trio, split into two cars, won eight of 13 races, demonstrating not only the superiority of the vehicle, but also the skills of the drivers and the exceptional teamwork of the team.

To this day, the Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am is a milestone in motorsport history. The technical developments had a significant impact on Audi's future work and laid the foundation for Audi Sport's continued success. WERK83 offers a model of Hans-Joachim Stuck's winning car with starting number 14 and the Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am with starting number 4, which was driven by the German driver duo Stuck and Röhrl, in scale 1:18.
