The start of a legendary movie series
What began in 1976 as a simple attempt by Sylvester Stallone to make a boxing film developed into an iconic movie series with seven parts. Stallone wrote the screenplay and directed the first part, which won three Oscars just one year after its release, including the one for Best Picture. The story of the underdog who gets to fight the world champion touched audiences deeply. Part three received another Oscar and a Golden Globe nomination, and in 1985 the fourth part of the series followed under the title "Rocky IV: The Fight of the Century".
Rocky IV: The great showdown
In "Rocky IV," Rocky fights in Russia against the boxer Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren. On the way to the fight, Stallone drives a Mercedes 450 SEL (W116). The model car manufacturer Greenlight has faithfully reproduced this Mercedes on a scale of 1:43. Another iconic scene shows Stallone driving through Philadelphia at night in a Lamborghini Jalpa. This scene captures the music video-like aesthetic of the 80s, characterized by formats such as Miami Vice. The model of the Lamborghini Jalpa in scale 1:18, manufactured by KK-Scale, has steerable front wheels and a removable hardtop. Both models are faithfully reproduced in detail from their originals from the film.
Historical vehicles
The Mercedes 450 SEL of the W116 series was built until 1980, making it a rare specimen with just over 7,000 units produced. In contrast, production of the Lamborghini Jalpa, built from 1982 to 1988, was still ongoing at the time of the film. The Jalpa was intended to serve as an entry-level model below the Countach, but had poor sales, which even appearances such as in "Rocky IV" could not improve. Lamborghini's bankruptcy in 1979 caused continued uncertainty among buyers.
A milestone of the movie history
Rocky IV was a milestone in the production of big-budget, heavily commercialized films. With a production budget of $28 million, the film grossed $300 million worldwide. Dolph Lundgren played one of the main roles alongside Sylvester Stallone as Ivan Drago. The film was released during the Cold War, a time of intense tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. Even though most of the "Russia scenes" were shot in Wyoming and Vancouver, the film represents a sporting bridge between East and West.
