Three Ford GT40 MK II made it to the first three overall positions in the traditional race and seemingly effortlessly left the competition behind. In the following years, the American manufacturer was able to achieve four overall victories in a row with its GTs and put manufacturers such as Porsche and Ferrari in their place that were previously believed to be almost all-powerful.
But behind the glorious triumph was a bitter battle for speed, reliability and the flawless movement of the cars on the fast and dangerous Circuit de la Sarthe. Of the 13 Ford GT40s entered, only three arrived in 1966. As in a motorsport crime thriller, it should be exactly the three cars that ultimately took the podium places. In addition to the superiority of the vehicles, the Ferrari failures played into the GT drivers' hands. Despite the wet conditions and poor visibility at night, all six drivers managed to keep their Ford GTs on the track until the early hours of the morning.
During the final hours of the race, the three vehicles almost crept around the course in order to reduce the risk of a technical defect or driving error to a minimum. In addition, it was agreed with the race management that the three Ford GT40 MK II were allowed to cross the finish line in a formation to once again underline the historic victory for the manufacturer. A picture that will probably never be seen again at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The winning vehicle with starting number two, driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon in the fast-paced black and white racing design, is available in the highest quality and true to detail as a model in scale 1:12 by CMR. Likewise the golden GT40 with starting number five, in which Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson took the checkered flag in third place.
The light blue coupé with starting number one, which Ken Miles and Denis Hulme placed second behind its black sister car at Le Mans, is detailed and available in the highest quality in 1:12 from CMR. A special highlight is the dirty version of this GT. The resin model gives the impression that it had sprinted down the Le Mans track itself. These Ford GT MK II models are an absolute must have for all fans.
