Rally-legends from the "good old days"

Rally-legends from the "good old days"

back to blog overview

There are few things that are as inextricably linked as German rallying and its icon, Walter Röhrl.

The racing driver, born in Regensburg, Bavaria, made a name for himself in the 70s and 80s with outstanding driving skills and the right amount of madness. His relentless training, fighting spirit and hard work were rewarded with a European and two world championship titles in rallying.

With his then co-driver Jochen Berger, Röhrl succeeded in 1974 in winning the driver's title in the European Championship. In Opel's golden hour, the two were successful two years in a row in the yellow and black Opel Ascona A 1.9 SR. After winning the title, the motorsport duo managed to win the Acropolis Rally in 1975, which also meant their first victory in the world championship.

It wasn't enough for the world championship title and the subsequent decision by the group to switch from the Ascona to the new Kadett GTE meant the temporary end between Röhrl and the manufacturer from Rüsselsheim. With his move to Fiat, a new driver pairing also emerged and one of the most successful duos in rally history stepped into the limelight.

With his new team colleague Christian Geistdörfer, Röhrl won four of the seven World Championship races in a Fiat 131 Abarth in 1980 and ultimately secured his first world championship title. Two years later, the team took a seat again in the cockpit of the rear-wheel drive Opel Ascona and, in a true crime thriller, again secured the world championship title on the Ivory Coast against the apparently superior Audi Quattro of Rallye-Amazon Michèle Mouton.

In 1984, the two rally legends drove the Audi Quattro Sport themselves and were able to easily win both the 21st International ADAC 3-City Rally and the first race of the World Rally Championship. This first stage, the Monte Carlo Rally, marked the spectacular start of the season with the crossing of the 1,600 meter high, mostly snow-covered Col de Turini.

With the Opel Ascona from 1975 and the Audi Quattro Sport from 1984, fans can now take a small piece of rally history home with them. The two models from CMR in scale 1:43 are available exclusively from ck-modelcars and impress with the highest quality and loving attention to detail.
