Review to the 90s: When Peugeot was still victorious

Review to the 90s: When Peugeot was still victorious

back to blog overview

For Peugeot, the 24 Hours of Le Mans were undoubtedly a prestige project. In view of the current starting difficulties with the new hypercar, old successes of the French are quickly forgotten.

As a reminder: Peugeot came back into the long distance world championship (FIA WEC) with the 9X8. Before its first participation in the 24-hour race with the spectacular vehicle, however, the brand from the Stellantis Group was only given outsider chances. The preparatory phase turned out to be too difficult for that. Above all, the lack of reliability is what prevented previous top results in the WEC.

Things went better with the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP, which the car manufacturer sent into the race for the first time in 2007. At the third attempt, they managed to beat Audi in a duel and win the 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, there were no further overall victories. For economic reasons, Peugeot pulled the plug on the commitment in the run-up to the 2012 season.

Doesn't sound like a proper success story so far, does it? Luckily there was still the Peugeot 905 Evo 1B. That vehicle was the basis for two overall victories in a row. In both 1992 and 1993, the world's oldest car brand managed to win at Le Mans.

The designs of both winning vehicles were identical, but the winning driver trios were different: in 1992 it was Yannick Dalmas, Derek Warwick and Mark Blundell who steered the 905 Evo 1B across the finish line first. The following year the winning team included Eric Hélary, Christophe Bouchut and Geoff Brabham.

Ixo has released both vehicles in scale 1:43 for Peugeot fans. One person who might have the models in his showcase is Jean Todt. The Frenchman was the team's race manager at the time and was therefore responsible for the victorious outing at Le Mans. Shortly thereafter, he switched to Formula 1 to lead a then unsuccessful brand from Italy to success again.
