Fans have eagerly awaited the new vehicles, because the past year was a very special one for the premium class. We have compiled five reasons for this.
1: The new vehicles
Slight adjustments to the technical regulations from season to season are nothing unusual in the Formula 1. The resulting changes to the cars are usually difficult to recognize, even for insiders. In 2022 it was different. Due to the major cuts in the regulations, the vehicles looked completely different at first glance than in previous years. Prototypes had already whetted the appetite of the fans for the new generation of cars. The expectations before the first team presentations at the beginning of February were correspondingly high. And the new look of Formula 1 should be well received. At first it provided variety on the racetrack, now also in the showcase.
2: Ferrari's start to the season
The new Ferrari already made a good impression during the test drives. When Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz then also achieved a double victory at the start in Bahrain, the Scuderia seemed able to finally fight for the World Cup crown again. Even if disillusionment spread a little later, the initial euphoria gave the new Formula 1 a certain shine. Memories of earlier Ferrari times were awakened - not only by the successes, but also by the design reminiscent of days gone by.
3: The enthusiasm around the world
Formula 1 has seen better days in Germany. In 2022, there was no German Grand Prix, no German winning driver and no regular free TV broadcast. Globally, on the other hand, Formula 1 has gained significant popularity thanks to the marketing by rights holder Liberty Media and not least thanks to the Netflix series “Drive To Survive”. This was also shown at the race track in the past season. A number of races were well attended, above all the Grand Prix in Austin with its record crowd of 440,000 announced spectators. In addition, after a two-year Corona break, classics such as Melbourne, Montreal and Suzuka were able to return to the calendar.
4: Variety despite Verstappen-dominance
Max Verstappen won 15 of the 22 races and defended the world title already on the fifth weekend. Even if the big showdown didn't happen, Formula 1 2022 always offered variety. With Carlos Sainz in a Ferrari and George Russell in a Mercedes, two new Grand Prix winners were celebrated. Kevin Magnussen grabbed pole position with the defeated Haas in Brazil. Zhou Guanyu was the first Chinese to start in Formula 1 and Nyck de Vries shone on his short-term debut at Monza and steered the Willams into the points.
5: Verstappen's title defense
Honor where honor is due: Max Verstappen was the 13th driver in the 73rd Formula 1 season to successfully defend his title.
