#ThrowbackThursday with the Porsche 917 K in scale 1:12

back to blog overview

Is 1:12 the new 1:18? TSM is a very good model of the shortback to the collectors on a large scale.

Model cars on a large scale 1:12 are not a new invention, but in the past few weeks it seems to us as if their number were increasing. On this scale the model car manufacturer True Scale Miniatures has once again taken the Porsche 917 K as an example: After the red model to the team of the Porsche KG Salzburg with the drivers Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood now comes the light blue, painted in gulf colors 24-hour race of Daytona 1970, controlled by Pedro Rodriguez, Leo Kinnunen and Brian Redman. The model measures 33 cm in this size, so it is 11 cm longer compared to the 1:18 format. The model car manufacturer, also referred to as the TSM in short, delivered the 917 K under the item number TSM141204 and in a limited edition of only 300 copies.

As always, we will look at the model made of high-quality Resine plastic and provide you with the most important facts as an example. With the Porsche 917, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer won the overall rating of the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time. Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood won with the Porsche of Team Porsche KG Salzburg. The car goes back to the prototype presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1969 and powered by an air-cooled 12-cylinder mid-engine with mid-drift. The first engines had an output of 383 kW / 520 hp at 8000 rpm with a displacement of around 4.5 liters. But the aerodynamics of the first 917 left something to be desired - first the cooperation with the team John Wyer Automotive Engineering should lead to satisfactory solutions. Wyer also used the car for Daytona.

The Porsche 917 K from TSM in detail

The engine was cooled by a fan wheel in the model very beautifully counted above the engine room. The 917 was one of the most successful racing cars of the 1970s, whose importance for Porsche is, in the sports car race, for the first time in the largest displacement class at that time, to have won several overall victories. Porsche had at that time every trophy in the cupboard, which is worth it to store. No wonder: at the beginning of the 1960s, a brand-new eight-cylinder engine was developed in the racing division, and a six-cylinder was developed for the standard cars, which was to lay the foundations for the later 911 legend. Both units were used in various races. The dominance was ready. Alone a victory at Le Mans and the world championship title on the long distance were missing. About the Porsche 908 and its two-cylinder longer 911 engine led the way to the Porsche 917.

With the models in 1:12 TSM delivers an eye-catcher that scores with the execution of its details. If you look at the headlights and their finish or on the rear axle and gearbox part, you will understand what we mean: meticulous and high-quality materials are an excellent picture of the sports car icon: lattice frame and chassis are a force. The same also applies to the reproduction of the cockpit with its comparatively sparse interior equipment. Our conclusion: The Porsche 917 K is the ultimate model car for those Porsche fans who do not want a collection at home, but a single, harsh gaze; No matter whether in the Salzburg colors or the friendly blue of the model presented here.
