It was one of the most record-breaking weekends in German motorsport history: the 53rd edition of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. Among the competitors were four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen, the BMW M3 Touring 24h, and many other fan favorites, including Christoph Krombach. Along with Axel Duffner, Oliver Kunz, and Leo-Livius Weber, Krombach competed in the Cup 3-AM class, as he had in previous rounds of the Nürburgring Endurance Series.
"This race fulfilled a childhood dream for me. A class victory at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, and with a record-breaking field of competitors in front of this record crowd," said Christoph Krombach after the checkered flag fell.
Traditionally, the weekend kicked off on the Wednesday before the race with the Adenauer Racing Day. There, fans diligently signed autographs and soaked up the unique atmosphere of the race. And even qualifying, traditionally divided into three sessions at the Eifel endurance classic, presented the quartet with a major challenge due to constantly changing weather conditions. Nevertheless, the Porsche crew secured a strong starting position for the race with a third-place finish in their class.
What followed was a real thriller: "Sunday morning, shortly after 9:00 a.m., I had a heavy impact at the Kesselchen corner, losing control of the Cayman at around 200 kph. At that point, I thought the race was over for us. But after a short stop, we were able to continue and bring home the class victory despite the changing weather," said Krombach. In the end, the Cayman, sporting the distinctive ck-modelcars livery, crossed the finish line after 135 laps in first place in the Cup 3-AM class and 33rd overall – four places ahead of the Mercedes-AMG driven by Max Verstappen.
The managing director of ck-modelcars also knows, however, that the greatest success of his racing career would not have been possible without the support of his team: “My thanks go to the entire W&S Motorsport team, my teammates Axel, Leo and Oliver, who did a fantastic job. I am particularly pleased with W&S Motorsport's double victory in the Cup 3-class, where we were able to secure the class win in both the PRO and AM categories.”
