15.10.2024Exceptional collector's items: model steering wheels from Formula 1

The Formula 1 models in the ck-modelcars shop are not stingy with attention to detail. But at scales such as 1:18 or even 1:43, details of smaller vehicle parts - such as the steering wheel - can only be guessed at.

The manufacturer HC Models has remedied this and released steering wheel models of some Formula 1 cars from the 2023 season. At a scale of 1:2, the many details on the complex components can be seen exactly.

The steering wheel of the 2023 McLaren certainly has symbolic value. After all, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri managed to bring the traditional British racing team towards the top bit by bit over the course of the season. In 2024, Zac Brown's team now even seems to be threatening Max Verstappen and Red Bull in the fight for the world championship title.

Such a constellation was unthinkable at the start of the 2023 season. After sobering test drives, McLaren was lagging behind and had to wait until the third Grand Prix in Australia for its first World Championship points. At the home race in Silverstone, Lando Norris achieved the long-awaited first podium result with second place. The Brit then made six more visits to the podium by the end of the season. Rookie Oscar Piastri also made it onto the podium twice in Japan and Qatar, providing a foretaste of his recent performances in Formula 1.

One of the things that catches the eye at first glance on the faithfully reproduced and detailed steering wheel of their McLaren MCL60 is the central display, on which, for example, the idle with the letter "N" and other parameters can be seen. Also clearly visible are the buttons for the radio at the top left and the speed limiter for the pit lane at the top right. There are also numerous buttons and dials that the drivers use on every single lap, for example to make settings for the engine mapping, traction control and brake balance.
Of course, the back of the steering wheel is also an exact replica of the original. The two paddle shifters that Norris and Piastri use to shift through their eight gears are particularly striking here. The clutch lever is also attached here, which is also known to be operated on the steering wheel in a Formula 1 car.

HC Models has also reproduced the steering wheels of Alfa Romeo and Alpine to an equally high standard. The three steering wheels can be easily distinguished from one another at first glance. The single central rotary control on the Alpine steering wheel is particularly striking, while the other two have three controls in that place.

All three models were made from resin and impressively represent the many small special features of a Formula 1 steering wheel.
