In 1987, with speed and perfection bordering on madness, Röhrl managed to maneuver the S1 over the 20-kilometer-long sand pass to the top of Pikes Peak in the traditional mountain race in Colorado with a record time of 10:47.85 minutes.
In the previous training sessions in the oxygen-poor mountain air, a problem with the turbocharger emerged that almost meant the team was out of action. But neither the Audi Sport Team nor Röhrl allowed themselves to be disturbed by the shuffling competition and ultimately managed to solve the problem and make the white horsepower monster with starting number one more powerful than ever.
In qualifying, the Finn Ari Vatanen in the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 was able to take first position ahead of Röhrl. Just a blink of an eye behind were two other competitors in the Peugeot - the Italian Andrea Zanussi and the Kenyan Shekhar Mehta. All three were ready and able to beat Röhrl on his way to the top of the mountain.
Ultimately, however, Röhrl managed to weave the almost 600 hp rally car at speeds of up to 190 kilometers per hour over the steep sandy stretch to the finish line with the utmost grace, leaving not only the Peugeots behind, but also the helicopter with the cameras.
The winning vehicle with the eye-catching aerodynamic add-on parts such as the brutal rear wing and the extensive modifications to the front and side parts is an absolute must-have model for every Audi, rally and Röhrl fan.
WERK83 offers the model in the usual high quality in a scale of 1:18. The unmistakable paintwork of the Audi Sport quattro in the typical colors is reflected in the best possible way, as are the countless fine details of the idiosyncratic body. The model has a true-to-original cockpit replica, steerable front wheels and opening doors.
