The Mercedes-AMG GT R celebrated its world premier on the 24th of June in 2016 in presence of Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, at the traditional english track Brookland of the Mercedes-Benz World area, in an especially impressive colour green hell magno. The car is nothing more than a higher motorized version of the Mercedes-AMG GT with improved aerodynamic, a more powerfull engine and a new look at the front: The manufacture installed the so called Panamericana-Grille for the first time, with the new GT R street version, in this model series. Its form with vertical struts celebrated its premiere already in the customer sport race car GT3 and reminds of the radiator grille how it determined with the Panamericana in the 1950er years, the form of the front of the participating Mercedes-Benz SL.
In addition to the modified appearance of the new front, the Mercedes-AMG GT R has been significantly expanded in the equipment extent: An extensively modified suspension, wider rear fenders, bulky front and rear bumpers, active rear axle steering, nine-way adjustable traction control and an adjustable coilover kit with additional electronic control belong to the standard extent. The front bumper is delivered with active elements; the rear spoiler is fixed and is supplemented by a spoiler lip on the tailgate. The specially developed exhaust system saves around six kilograms of weight compared to the AMG GT S with the use of titanium for the rear muffler and thin-walled stainless steel for the front area of the exhaust system.

The tailpipe trim, which is centrally located in the rear bumper, emphasizes the racing character with its special, hexagonal shape; further tailpipes are located on the left and right side of the diffuser. The AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine in the AMG GT R delivers 430 kW / 585 hp and thus 55 kW / 75 hp more than the previous top engine in the Mercedes-AMG GT S with its 375 kW / 510 hp. The maximum torque of 700 Newton meters (Nm) is available at the new GT R from 1,900 to 5,500 rpm. This is hidden at the new models of CMR, because the doors and hoods are closed as usual in this size.
