The year 2018 was a very special one for Porsche in motorsport, as the brand celebrated its 50th anniversary. The performances of the various Porsche teams at the year's major endurance classics were correspondingly emotional.
The Gulf Racing Porsche 911 (991) RSR was particularly striking, instantly becoming a crowd favorite at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with its iconic Gulf livery. The classic light blue and orange paint scheme continues to set hearts racing among motorsport fans worldwide and evokes memories of the golden age of endurance racing. Ixo has recreated this popular race car in meticulous detail at a large scale 1:12.
The Gulf Porsche competed in the LMGTE Am class at Le Mans 2018 with starting number 86. The RSR was driven by Mike Wainwright, Ben Barker, and Alex Davison. Despite an early incident, the team fought their way back and ultimately brought the Porsche home in tenth place in its class.
To coincide with this, Ixo is also releasing a model in scale 1:12 of the official Porsche GT Team's 2018 24 Hours of Daytona. This brings together two true endurance classics: Le Mans, Europe's most famous race, and Daytona, the American motorsport highlight. Both cars impressively demonstrate the versatility and global success of the Porsche 911 RSR.
The Porsche GT Team entered Daytona in 2018 with high expectations. The No. 911 911 RSR was a crowd favorite in the highly competitive GTLM class and boasted a strong driver lineup of all Porsche factory drivers: Patrick Pilet, Nick Tandy, and Fred Makowiecki. However, the Zuffenhausen-based team had bad luck in the race: plagued by several problems, the No. 911 ultimately finished eighth in its class.
The Porsche GT Team entered Daytona in 2018 with high expectations. The Porsche 911 RSR itself is one of the most successful GT race cars of its time. While the generation introduced in 2017 still retained the classic 911 design, it set new technical standards. Most notably, the six-cylinder boxer engine was moved further forward, making the 911 RSR a mid-engined race car for the first time. This resulted in significantly improved balance and made the Porsche one of the most powerful cars in international GT endurance racing. In 2018, Porsche even celebrated a one-two finish in the GTE Pro class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Ixo has impressively recreated both models in scale 1:12. The interiors of the duo also impress with numerous meticulous details. The roll cage, racing steering wheel, seats, and the functional cockpit reflect the uncompromising character of the real endurance race cars.
