In 2024, Lewis Hamilton belongs to the most successful Formula 1 drivers of all time. With seven world championship titles, the Briton shares the record with Michael Schumacher. He is also the only driver to have won more than 100 Grand Prix races.

In view of these successes, it seems almost surreal that ten years ago Lewis Hamilton only had one world championship title under his belt and was just about to win a second. Hamilton, his teammate Nico Rosberg and the Mercedes team dominated the 2014 season, which was the start of the modern turbo era. With the powerful and efficient 1.6-liter V6 turbo engine, the Mercedes was almost unbeatable in the first year of the new regulations. 16 wins in 19 races this season for the German manufacturer speak for themselves.

For the title decision, Lewis Hamilton brought a good cushion of 17 points over his teammate Nico Rosberg to Abu Dhabi. Nevertheless, Rosberg had realistic hopes of winning the World Championship, because in 2014 double points were awarded at the final Grand Prix - for the first and last time.

Rosberg increased the pressure even further with pole position, but Hamilton won the start and dominated the race. When Rosberg then had to struggle with a loss of power, the Briton's triumphant drive to his second World Championship victory was unstoppable.

The title marked the beginning of years of dominance by Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. With the exception of Rosberg's World Championship victory in 2016, Hamilton won the World Championships in a row until 2020, while Mercedes was also unbeatable in the constructors' championship.
