Private matter: Joest with Le Mans-double victory for Porsche

Private matter: Joest with Le Mans-double victory for Porsche

back to blog overview

In the 80s, Porsche determined the 24 hours of Le Mans. Between 1981 and 1987, the competitors couldn't get past the manufacturer from Zuffenhausen for seven years in a row. It wasn't just the works cars that were in the spotlight.

Two of the seven victories went to the account of a private team - Joest Racing. Nowadays, the team around Reinhold Joest gets associated especially with the numerous Audi-triumphs in Le Mans. But in the 80s, the team shined at the endurance classic race with the use of Porsche models.

In 1984 and 1985 it was even enough for overall victory – the first two of 16 that have been won to date. The circumstances were exceptional. The 1980s were the heyday for Group C cars and the revolutionary regulations that came with them. The Rothmans works team from Porsche canceled their participation in Le Mans in 1984 because of disagreements over the new fuel limit regulations. Joest Racing stepped into the breach with their privately entered Porsche 956B. Klaus Ludwig and Henri Pescarolo won despite constant problems with the left suspension.

In 1985 Joest Racing repeated the success, with the identical chassis. Interestingly, the team achieved such a chassis double win again in 1996 and 1997 with the TWR-Porsche WSC-95. The renewed victory for Klaus Ludwig in 1985 marked the last of his three Le Mans triumphs. Ludwig's teammates were Paolo Barilla from the dynasty of the pasta manufacturer of the same name, and Louis Krages, alias John Winter, who is also known to many German racing fans from his fire accident in the DTM at the Avus in 1994.

CMR has produced these victorious Porsche 956B in scale 1:12 from resin. Because of the massive size of the models, the striking design of the French clothing brand NewMan comes very good into its own. Two great feasts for the eyes as a reminder of Porsche's long series of successes and the first entries in Joest's long list of victories.
