Walter Röhrl is Germany's only rally world champion to this day, the man whose Pikes Peak record was not beaten by any other vehicle with a front engine from 1987 until today and the only one who won the Monte Carlo Rally four times with four different vehicles. Walter Röhrl celebrated his 40th anniversary on May 15th this year, with his only season in which he started in the rally in a Porsche. The gold-black Porsche 924 Carrera GTS, which CMR produced exclusively for ck-modelcars in scale 1:43, rolled off the starting ramp into the rally season at that time in 1981, piloted by Walter Röhrl and his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer. At the end of the season there were four overall wins. One of them at the Hessen rallye in June 1981. The diecast model by CMR is reminiscent of the original vehicle in the colors of the cognac manufacturer Monnet.
In 1981, the Porsche 924 Carrera GTS was the most expensive production Porsche of all time at the time, at a purchase price of DM 110,000 (old German currency). The vehicle used in the rally is number five of a total of nine prototypes made at the time. The engine is a test engine, which for this reason does not have a serial number and yet survived an entire rally season unscathed. Today, 40 years later, the same engine with a mileage of just over 10,000 km still powers the gold and black oldie. Because the original vehicle still exists and is ready to drive.
The car has been restored also where it was built 40 years ago, in the racing department of Porsche in Weissach. During this process, Porsche attached great importance to preserve the patina. In addition to replacing wear parts and checking engine and clutch parts, the marks left by the special stages should not be blurred. Porsche has thus preserved a piece of history for posterity and made Walter Röhrl happy on his 74th birthday when the restored car was presented to him on his doorstep as a surprise.
