In 1993, McLaren started without the Honda engine that had contributed significantly to their success in previous years. Instead, the team relied on Ford-Cosworth engines, which offered less power and fewer technological advances than the Renault engines used by Williams. In addition, Senna's rival Alain Prost returned to Formula 1 in 1993 and drove for Williams, which reignited the rivalry between him and Senna. Prost had the advantage of having the best car in the field, which combined with his skills gave him a big advantage over the rest of the field. Senna, on the other hand, had to rely on his driving talent and will to remain competitive in the inferior McLaren.

Despite the technical disadvantages, Ayrton Senna managed to drive some of the best races of his career this season. And although Alain Prost won the title with Williams quite easily this season, Ayrton Senna impressed with his absolute will to win. He won five races that season (Brazil, Donington, Monaco, Japan and Australia), although his car was clearly inferior.

His victory at the 1993 Australian Grand Prix in particular will go down in the history of the premier class of motorsport forever. The triumph on the Adelaide Street Circuit not only concluded the season of that year, but also the era of Ayrton Senna in the service of McLaren. It was also to be the last victory of his Formula 1 career.

Senna started the race from pole position and was in total control of the action and his closest rival Alain Prost at all times throughout the entire race distance. With his 41st career victory to date, Senna closed the chapter at McLaren and decided to start for Frank Williams' team in the coming season. This was to mark a new career phase for the Brazilian. However, the collaboration ended tragically early in the 1994 season in Imola, Italy.
