Collections are becoming complete: Porsche's Le Mans winner from 1976 as a model for the first time

Collections are becoming complete: Porsche's Le Mans winner from 1976 as a model for the first time

back to blog overview

In 1970, Porsche won the 24-hour-race of Le Mans for the first time. 18 further victories came so far until the most recent triumph in 2017.

With their different names, colors and shapes, the 19 winning cars cover the development of the long-distance classic and its racing cars over five decades. The miniature editions are always in demand, whether individually or as part of select collections by Porsche and Le Mans fans.

However, the victorious Porsche 936 of Jacky Ickx and Gijs van Lennep from 1976 has not been in this series so far. The car simply didn't exist as a model - until now. Because recently the ck-modelcars label Werk83 offers the 936 from 1976 in scale 1:18. This means that all Le Mans winning cars from Porsche are finally available as models. So good news for all enthusiasts who can now fill this long-standing gap in their well-stocked collections.

Victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans alone is reason enough to impose the car as a model. But the 936 impresses with much more, for example with the striking shape with the flat nose, the huge air intake behind the cockpit and the opulent rear wing. The car also bears the colors and lettering of Martini Racing - a design with which Porsche has celebrated a number of great successes and which is still one of the most popular outfits on the racing scene today. In addition, the Porsche 936 is a Le Mans milestone. With its supercharged 2.1-litre flat-six engine, it was the first turbocharged car to win at the Sarthe.

Even if the car was developed in a hurry and largely with existing components from its predecessors, the Porsche 936 was dominant at Le Mans in 1976. The Alpine A442, which was fastest in qualifying, initially led the race, but recurring engine problems forced the car into the pits several times before the evening hours and finally gave up. Jacky Ickx and Gijs von Lennep took the lead and quickly ran away. Even after a comprehensive exhaust repair on Sunday, the advantage over the second-placed Mirage was still eleven laps. For Jacky Ickx it was the third of his six Le Mans victories. Gijs van Lennep won for the second time after the success of 1971 and ended his career after the race.

The Porsche 936, on the other hand, was just getting started. In addition to successes in the World Sportscar Championship, the Interseries and the German Racing Championship, there were two more Le Mans victories in 1977 and 1981. After these two winning cars have long since been implemented as modelcars, the new Werk83 model of the 936 from 1976 finally completes this series.
