Welcome to Miami: Verstappen wins the premiere of the new US Grand Prix

back to blog overview

Who would have thought that Formula 1 and the USA would one day get along as well as they do now: an American rights holder, an American driver and record numbers of visitors to the race track.

And the uptrend continues. The US-brand Ford is going to be new engine supplier at Red Bull from 2026, the team Andretti is working on an entry and more races on American soil are being planned. In 2023, the eagerly awaited Grand Prix in Las Vegas will be the third US date on the calendar. The race in Miami made its debut last year. The first winning car from the Sunshine State, Max Verstappen's Red Bull RB18, has arrived in our shop as a model.

Around 15 years ago, Formula 1 was barely noticed in the USA. The premier class had been driving in the States for decades, but after the scandalous race in Indianapolis in 2005, in which only six cars had started, the US date soon fell off the calendar. Now, a decade and a half later, Formula 1 is once again generating enthusiasm in America. With Liberty Media, an American company has held the rights and strengthened marketing on the American continent since 2017. Another resounding success is the Netflix docuseries “Drive To Survive”, launched in 2019, which has given Formula 1 a whole new audience – especially in the USA.

In addition to the race in Austin, which has been established since season 2012, there will be a second US Grand Prix in the middle of Miami in 2022. The 5.4-kilometer route runs around Hard Rock Stadium. With this city location and close-set walls, the course has a city-track character, although no public roads are involved.

The premiere race became a clear matter for Max Verstappen. The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz started from the front row in front of the Dutchman. Verstappen grabbed Sainz in the first corner and also snatched the lead from Leclerc early in the race. Although his lead melted again shortly before the end due to a safety car phase, the eventual world champion immediately regained some breathing room after a successful restart and became the first winner of the Miami Grand Prix.

ck-modelcars exclusively offers Max Verstappen's Red Bull RB18, manufactured by Minichamps and limited to 444 pieces. The model in scale 1:43 is delivered in a high-cover collector's outer packaging and not only commemorates a new and somewhat bizarre Grand Prix, but also the beginning of Verstappen's dominance in the season 2022. In the four previous races, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc had excited several times with tough fights. In Miami, Verstappen was really dominant for the first time and gave the impression that he and his Red Bull are superior to the Ferrari package. This impression was to be confirmed throughout the season and Max Verstappen became world champion for the second time.
