Starting in 2027, a legendary racing duel will be revived. Ferrari and Ford will once again compete side by side for overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The clash between the Italian and American manufacturers had already shaped the endurance classic in the 1960s and was based on a memorable history.
After a deal between the two brands fell through, Ford set itself the goal of beating Ferrari at Le Mans. This was a daunting task, as the Italians were the serial winners at Le Mans in the early 1960s. For this purpose, Ford entered the now-legendary GT40, which, after initial difficulties, finally beat Ferrari in 1966, celebrating a one-two finish.
To avoid another defeat the following year, Ferrari further developed its racing car for the 1967 sports car season. Their 330 P4 featured significant modifications compared to the previously fielded P3. The V12 engine now had three valves per cylinder. The chassis was also slightly shortened, and the transmission and suspension system were improved.
The season got off to a successful start with a one-two-three victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona. The finish line photo of the trio driving parallel through the banked corner went around the world and remains a famous image in the history of endurance racing.
Later in the year, however, Ferrari was again defeated at the season's highlight in Le Mans. Ludovico Scarfiotti of Italy and Mike Parkes of Great Britain drove the best of the three factory cars, starting number 21, to the finish in second place. They were a significant four laps behind Dan Gurney and A. J. Foyt in the winning Ford GT40. The Ferrari had been pushed forward primarily by retirements and incidents among its competitors. In terms of pure pace, the 330 P4 had no match for the Ford.
The rest, too, is history. Ford won two more times after 1967 and achieved a four-year winning streak at Le Mans with the GT40. Ferrari's next triumph in the overall classification would ultimately wait until its Hypercar debut in 2023.
