The model, which originally served as a homologation vehicle for the racing use of the special-GT-vehicles, hit like a bomb when it was presented at the Paris Motor Show. Within less than eight weeks, all 500 vehicles had found a new owner and the success story of the super sports car with the ducktail began.
The following year, Porsche was able to win the 24 Hours of Daytona by an incredible 22 laps ahead with the first racing car from this series, the 911 Carrera RSR 2.8, driven by Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg. The 3-liter variant of the Carrera RSR was also able to score points at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and won the class in the same year. As the icing on the cake, Roger Penske fielded twelve identical 911 Carrera RSR 3.0s in different colors in the newly created International Race of Champions, IROC for short, with international top drivers taking control of the steering wheels.
The name Carrera, which was emblazoned on the sides of the vehicle as lettering on the 3.0 RSR, is derived from the "Carrera Panamericana", where Porsche was able to celebrate unforgettable successes with the 550 Spyder in the 1950s. From then on, the suffix stood for the most powerfully motorized vehicle. The top model of the 911 was the first to be allowed to bear the lettering in the well-known place between the wheel arches. This design element can still be seen today in top models such as the GT3 RS.
In addition to the air-cooled three-liter boxer engine, the precise chassis and the unique driving dynamics of the RSR, as with the IROC models, the diverse color scheme rounds off the overall concept. Customers could and can choose from more than 27 paint colors and express every imaginable wish, whereby the coordination of Carrera lettering and rims was already a standard procedure.
With the models of the street versions of the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR in black, yellow and orange in 1:18, WERK83 offers small splashes of color for the collector's shelf. The blue RSR from the IROC series with starting number five is a special highlight. The vehicle driven by Pikes Peak winner Bobby Our is pure Porsche racing car history and should not be missing in any collection.
