One could say that the Alfa 164 Q4 rescued Alfa Romeo from distress. Actually, the model that Alfa wanted to launch in 1980 was supposed to be called the Alfa 156 and replace the long-outdated Alfa 6 in the upper middle class. However, a financial inconvenience existing at Alfa at that time meant that the company had to close. It was only after the purchase of Fiat that the undertaking could be restarted and finally implemented. The implementation took place in cooperation with Fiat, Lancia and Saab on a common platform. The resulting models are the Fiat Chroma, the Lancia Thema, the Saab 9000 and the Alfa 164, which we want to present in today's blog post from the label Triple 9. Even today, the Alfa 164, which appeared solely as a notchback limousine, is considered the vehicle that was able to ensure the continued existence of Alfa Romeo. In the basic version, the Alfa 164 was available with a transversely mounted four- and six-cylinder engine. From 1991, the four-wheel drive version Q4, which we are presenting in today's blog post, was added to the previously only front-wheel drive vehicles. The official market launch of the Alfa 164 in Germany took place in September 1988. At that time, Alfa wanted to make sure that it really had eliminated all “teething troubles”. The first revision of the model took place 2 years later. The engine and transmission were relocated in 1990 in order to reduce the often-criticised disruptive forces under load and when accelerating in a straight line, thereby giving the 164 better handling. A further two years later another revision took place, which gave the Alfa the model name 164 Super. In addition to an optical revision of the interior, the modification was entirely within the scope of occupant protection. In addition to increased impact protection, airbags were now also optional when ordering.
In the version of the original model (1987-1990), the Alfa 164 was only available with a four-cylinder engine. The Twin Spark 2.0 liter developed between 143 hp and 175 hp, depending on the model. From 1991 the six-cylinder engine in the Alfa 164 also moved in. In addition to the 2.0 liter variant of the V6, which had a turbocharged output of 211 hp, there were also various naturally aspirated V6 engines with a displacement of 3.0 liters, which ranged in performance between 180 hp and 192 hp. The super V6 24V engine was the most powerful engine until the appearance of the Q4 with 211 hp. From 1994 the Alfa 164 Q4 with 232 hp set the climax. In addition to the petrol engines, there was also a 2.5 liter turbo diesel, which initially had 117 hp and towards the end of the construction period 125 hp. A total of 273,000 Alfa 164s rolled off the assembly line after the end of the production period up to 1997. Of these, 158,057 models are based on the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine. Another 45,602 customers chose a diesel engine. The remaining 69,341 models were equipped with the 3.0 liter V6 engine. The Alfa 164 Q4 model from our blog post has just 1206 pieces and is therefore a rare rarity on the used car market.
