VW-Bulli: fleet transporter
by Peter Kurze
Hardly any vehicle has shaped and dominated its class for years as much as the VW Transporter, which has been in production since 1950. The small transporter, known internally as "Type 2" (Type 1 was the Beetle), goes back to an idea of the Dutch VW importer in 1948, who thus initiated a unique success story.
VW vans were the backbone of the economic boom in post-war Germany, they solved the transport problems of trade and crafts and were therefore often referred to as the "workhorses of the economic miracle". They were available as standard as a flatbed and panel van and as a minibus. The robust, air-cooled boxer engine in the rear and the almost unlimited possible uses with special bodies of all kinds quickly made them commercial vehicles in demand worldwide. The camping versions, designed for holidays and leisure, quickly became international icons of private automobile use.
The first van model, the T1, recognizable by the V-shaped front section with the split window, was replaced in 1967 by the T2, which quickly became an export hit with a single window and a more powerful engine. Of the 2.5 million units built in Germany, more than two thirds went abroad. The T3 followed in 1979.
With numerous contemporary photos and graphics, this lovingly designed volume is reminiscent of the early years of one of the most successful vehicles in the domestic automotive industry.
