In the 1991 German Touring Car Championship (DTM) season, it wasn't just the performance of the cars that caused a stir – the design of some of the cars also made motorsport history. Particularly striking was the Opel Omega 500 DTM driven by Volker Strycek, affectionately nicknamed "Pommes-Omega."

The vehicle was part of Opel's ambitious attempt to compete with established giants like Mercedes and BMW with the Omega. Equipped with a highly tuned V8 engine producing around 500 hp, the Omega 500 DTM represented serious competition – at least on paper. Despite its potential, Opel couldn't consistently hold its own against the major brands. Nevertheless, the car became a crowd favorite.

The season was characterized by an extremely high level of competition. Factory teams like Mercedes-Benz with the 190E 2.5-16 Evo II, BMW with the M3 Sport Evolution, and Audi with the V8 quattro engaged in thrilling battles at the highest level of technical sophistication. Audi's all-wheel-drive technology, in particular, sparked controversy and later led to changes to the regulations. Opel, with its Omega 3000 24V and later its 500 DTM, was only partially able to keep up with the dominant rivals. In this environment, the Omega 500 was something of an outsider—fast, but not consistent enough to reach the top. It is all the more remarkable that the car nevertheless managed to secure a permanent place in the fans' memories.

The striking design of the car of former Opel Motorsport Director Volker Strycek remains truly unforgettable: yellow stripes on a red background, inevitably reminiscent of a portion of fries with ketchup. The striking color scheme was a bold departure from the otherwise mostly sober motorsport look of the era.

Volker Strycek, himself a veteran of German motorsport, piloted the Pommes-Omega throughout the season, even though it failed to achieve major success. Ninth place would ultimately prove its best result of the season. Today, the car is a cult classic and can regularly be seen at historic motorsport events – often surrounded by fans who are enthusiastic not only about its sound but also about its unusually delicious design.

The vehicle is now available as a model in scale 1:18 by manufacturer WERK83. The model was produced in the usual high WERK83 quality and reflects the original as accurately as possible. Special highlights include a faithful reproduction of the cockpit and opening doors.
