The American Way of Life in Germany: German DTM icons and their Mustangs

The American Way of Life in Germany: German DTM icons and their Mustangs

back to blog overview

In the 80s and 90s of the "old DTM", the big Ford Mustang-race cars belonged to the spectator favourites. WERK83 has released numerous models of the iconic American car of the brand colleagues Gerd Ruch and Jürgen Feucht in scale 1:18. RRP €79.95, item-no.: W1802401 & W1802402

With its brutally loud eight-cylinder engine with five liters of displacement and 540 horsepower and weighing just under 1,000 kilograms, the Ford Mustang 5.0 DTM was a difficult projectile to control. From 1988 to 1994, one driver in particular attracted attention in this special vehicle. Racing driver Jürgen Feucht became well-known not so much for his successes as for his striking appearance and his laid-back manner. His height of almost two meters alone immediately stood out among the motorsports enthusiasts. In addition, he wore long hair, cowboy boots and aviator glasses.

The engine builder from Darmstadt, Germany competed bravely, but mostly without a chance, against the factory teams of Alfa Romeo, BMW and Mercedes in the German Touring Car Championship. But despite all the lack of success in the classic sense, fans celebrated his crossing the finish line with the white Mustang 5.0 DTM, the black and red Ford Challenger Mustang GT 5.0 and his American way of life as if he had achieved overall victory in every race.

1994 was the last season of the likeable outlaw. The homologation of the DTM Mustang expired that year. This meant that Feucht and his vehicle ended their careers.

His brand colleague Gerd Ruch, racing driver and team boss of Ruch Motorsport, also found himself in the cockpit of his white Mustang with starting number 22 for the last time in 1994. In the following season, Ruch switched briefly to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class designed by AMG before he too ended his career. Like Jürgen Feucht, Gerd Ruch was hardly competitive in the privately used Ford Mustang and fought as an underdog against the factory teams of the well-known brands. His greatest success with the Mustang was tenth place and thus a point finish at the Norisring in 1993.

The various model variants of the Ford Mustang 5.0 DTM by Jürgen Feucht and Gerd Ruch can now be seen neatly parked in collector's display cases. The diecast zinc models in scale 1:18 from WERK83 have steerable front wheels and opening doors.
