After his successful debut, very few experts would have expected that his Formula 1-career would be over (for now) after just eleven Grand Prix.
Like most racing drivers, his career started in karting. The Dutchman even became world champion in 2011 and 2012. This was followed by promotion to the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, where he won the championship title in 2014. The young formula career was crowned with winning the FIA Formula 2 in 2019.
As the reigning Formula 2-champion, de Vries was initially denied to get into the premier class. As part of Mercedes' promotion of young talent, he switched to Formula E for the 2019 season and competed there for the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team. In just his second season, Nyck de Vries also won the championship title in this series and was crowned Formula E-champion with two wins and four further podium places.
In addition to his success in the all-electric racing series, he never lost sight of his big goal, Formula 1. As a test driver for Williams Racing, he was able to complete the first Friday sessions in 2022. His big opportunity came in Monza: due to regular driver Alex Albon's illness, de Vries celebrated his Formula 1 debut at the Italian Grand Prix. From a standing start, the then 27-year-old immediately scored points in ninth place. A feat that only very few rookies have achieved in the history of the premier class.
After this strong first race, Nyck de Vries was promoted to regular driver at Alpha Tauri for the 2023 season. But after the strong debut he struggled and didn't even make it into the points in the first ten races. The team pulled the ripcord and swapped the Dutchman for Daniel Ricciardo.
Aside from formula racing, de Vries has also been driving sports cars for years. After his first exclamation points in the LMP2 class and the end of his Formula 1-career, he has been racing for Toyota Gazoo Racing in the Hypercar class since the 2024 season. With the factory team from Munich he recently achieved his first overall victory in the FIA WEC in Imola.
The model for the Formula 1 debut in Monza is available exclusively from ck-modelcars. The car in scale 1:43 from the manufacturer Minichamps is limited to 444 copies and is sold in a high-cover collector's packaging.
