Porsche racing service-bulli celebrates comeback

Porsche racing service-bulli celebrates comeback

back to blog overview

Since Porsche did not have its own delivery vans in its repertoire, the Zuffenhausen-based company used the T1 model from Volkswagen for its racing activities in the 1950s.

Different versions of the Bullis were used as transport and support vehicles for the Porsche works teams in racing up until the 1970s. In addition to transporting tools, spare parts and mechanics, the Bulli was also used as a place to stay and as a shuttle for the drivers.

The dark red T1 Bulli was first used in 1954 at the Mille Miglia in northern Italy. In the legendary road race from Brescia to Rome and back again, Hans Hermann and Herbert Linge prevailed against the Italian competition in the Porsche 550 Spyder and celebrated a top 10 placement. A success that should be unforgettable in many ways.

Despite meticulous notes by Herbert Linge on the route and all level crossings, which are still considered to be the origin of the road book, the two Porsche drivers faced a closed level crossing at a speed of 160 kph. Due to the flat chassis shape of the Spyder, the two Germans ducked their heads and shot under the barrier. The race could be continued undamaged and in the end the courage was rewarded with class victory and sixth place overall.

To celebrate the nearly 70th anniversary of the workshop van, Porsche teamed up again with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in 2023. Instead of the T1, the new, electrically driven ID Buzz now shines in the well-known dark red paintwork with the inscription "Renndienst". In brand trophies such as the Porsche Carrera Cup, the new Bulli, like its ancestors, serves as a shuttle bus and for transporting tools and spare parts.

One of the original racing service Bullis from 1963, the year of the original 911, is available in a limited edition in scale 1:43 from Minichamps exclusively at ck-modelcars and modelissimo. The dark red T1 impresses with its attractive appearance as well as its high quality and authenticity.
